Top Kids’ Toys For Christmas 2018

Dream Toys 2018

Yesterday I headed along to the annual toy fest that is Dream Toys. Each year the day begins with the announcement of the 12 top toys for the coming Christmas as judged by a panel of experts.

Also on display are a whole host of awesome toys from all the top brands and a smattering of helpful people to tell you all about them!

This year the top 12 toys that are predicted to dominate the Christmas lists of children across the UK are:

A festive train laden with toys

  • Barbie Ultimate Kitchen
  • Boxer
  • Cra-Z-Slimy Creations Super Slime Studio
  • Fingerlings Untamed Jailbreak T-Rex Playset
  • LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall
  • Harry Potter Wizard Training Wand
  • L.O.L. Surprise! Pop-Up Store
  • L.O.L. Surprise! Under Wraps
  • Laser X Twin Pack
  • Monopoly Fortnite Edition
  • Paw Patrol Ultimate Fire Truck
  • Poopsie Surprise Unicorn

Although there’s a few crackers in there, quite a few didn’t really float my proverbial boat. So here is our YHTL guide to the top toys for Christmas 2018 based on nothing more than my completely subjective opinion of what they had at Dream Toys. You’re welcome…

1. Gravitrax

I’ve seen Gravitrax demonstrated at a couple of events now and I love it. It’s basically a really well made marble run that people of any age can build into whatever their imagination can come up with. Really easy to build, pretty sturdy, easy to tidy away and with more features than you could throw a stick at. The photo above is 4 sets combined but even with the starter pack you can do wonders.

2. Scruff-a-luvs

A really cracking concept whereby you look after and bring back to health a mystery animal. It arrives as a scruffy ball of fur and by bathing it, combing it, drying it and looking after it you’ll see it become one of 3 happy animals! Ideal for pet lovers or children who like caring for things, and some of the proceeds go to the RSPCA. Nice!

3. Foxy Pants

I love a good family game. Lots of games this year seem to involve poo, farts and snot but this one is good clean fun. Admittedly there’s a fox that drops his trousers sending concealed chicken flying around the gaff, but it’s done in a nice way!

4. Lego, Lego, Lego

Lego sets are always going to be popular at Christmas. This year there’s a couple of newish ones that looked cool at Dream Toys. For Harry Potter fans there’s a loaf of new sets, including the awesome Hogwarts one that featured in the Dream Toys Top 12 and for dinosaur lovers there’s a variety of kits based on the Jurassic World franchise, like this one.

5. Stretch Superheroes

If your little ones likes pulling on things to see how far they stretch (4 year old boys especially!) and also love superheroes then this series is likely to go down well! Having had a good stretch myself it is actually quite therapeutic!

6. Playmobil Jurassic World

Not to be outdone, Playmobil have also tapped into the Jurassic World franchise with a new set that has quite a few fun features, with mysteries to discover and some cool torch-based lighting effects, such as hidden symbols that appear under light.

7. Pop! Marvel Range

If you’re looking for a few stocking fillers for a superhero loving child these are quite fun. I particularly liked the very intimidating Christmas Hulk!

8. Airhogs Supernova

I had to mention this one as it was the most visually interesting item there as it was flying around the room! You can control it (sort of!) using your hands to guide it around the room, although I did see it collide with a few people / things when the operator couldn’t quite keep up with it!

9. Harry Potter Sorting Hat

It wouldn’t be Christmas without some Harry Potter merchandise! This year you can get a very cool sorting hat which tells you which house you fit best into. For some reason I ended up in Slytherin…

10. Harry Potter Wizard Training Wand

If you’re not content with the sorting hat and the Lego Hogwarts you can also perfect your wand technique with a training wand that comes in a variety of styles based on your favourite characters.

Each wand comes with 11 different spells to perfect by waving the wand in the correct pattern sequence. If successful the wand will talk to you. You can also use them as laser tag devices so you can battle your friends! Pretty cool.
