Some random and fascinating facts to share with your friends.

1. Did you know you can look at Mars on Google Earth? Just try Google Mars and see for yourself.

2. Henry Ford was a famous carmaker who said: “You can have any colour, as long as it’s black!”

3. J.R.R.Tolkien, who wrote The Hobbit, was friends with Lewis Carroll and C.S.Lewis. They were in a writing group together called the Inklings.

4. Did you know the German word for “pineapple” is “Ananas” but the word for bananas is “Bananen”?

5.  In ancient times, the colour purple came from a kind of sea snail. It was rare, and this made purple expensive, which is why it’s still seen as a Royal colour, even today. 

6. Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, has the lowest amount of water of anything in the Solar System.

7. Did you know that magicians have a Magic Circle? All the tricks have to be kept secret, so you can’t talk about them with anyone outside the Magic Circle. 

8. Egyptians wrote in symbols called hieroglyphics. They carved them on walls or wrote them on special paper made of reeds, called papyrus.

9. Water can exist in all three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) at the same time. It’s called the triple point.

10. The Dutch have chocolate sprinkles on bread for breakfast. It’s called “hagelslag.”

11. Did you know the first toilet was invented in 1596?

12. Cochlear implants are a kind of device that surgeons put into your head to help you hear if you’re deaf.

13. In 1666 there was a massive fire in London. It started in a bakery in Pudding Lane. It became known as the Great Fire of London.

14. Pluto used to be the ninth planet in the Solar System, but scientists changed its status in 2006. It is now considered a dwarf planet.

15. The first alphabetic writing was used by the Phoenicians more than 3000 years ago.

16. The biggest selling song ever is White Christmas.

17. Vincent van Gogh was a famous painter who cut off his own ear. He is famous for paintings like Starry Night and Sunflowers.

18. There have been two World Wars. One from 1914 – 1918 called the First World War, and one from 1939 – 1945 called the Second World War.

19. In William Shakespeare’s will, he only left his wife his second-best bed. However, the law at the time meant she would automatically inherit one-third of his belongings, so he didn’t need to make a particular point to leave her a house or money.

20. Did you know J. M. Barrie, the author of the Peter Pan books, got the idea for his stories by listening to the children next door playing a game?
