Hey Toddler, Leave That Clock Alone

Our little one is generally pretty good at sleeping. He is normally fairly compliant when bedtime arrives, has a tried and tested bedtime routine and drifts off reasonably quickly. However he isn’t always the best at waking us up at a time that doesn’t feel like we are being beaten round the head with a spiky stick.

I’m pretty shocking in the morning anyway, so being repeatedly woken up at 530am isn’t really conducive to top notch parenting. Sarah had been talking about trying a Gro Clock for ages so we finally bought one and have given it a good go over the past couple of weeks.

After a few attempts it had actually been working pretty well and the little one had started getting into the habit of knowing not to scream like a demented bandit until the ‘sun’ came out at 645am. This success continued until, as so often is the case, Joshua figured out a way round it – this time by realising that the ‘sun’ can actually be made to ‘come out’ by pressing the button at whatever time you fancy waking up! Meaning that the whole process became a bit pointless, as he can now wake up at 530am, make the sun come up and then legitimately scream the house down!

In other news, I’m definitely heading to Blogfest this year as I now have a ticket courtesy of the lovely Maddy from The Speed Bump who unfortunately could no longer make it! Barring disaster this will be my first ever blogging conference so hopefully come 13th November this whole blog will be a load more professional and I will be firmly on the path to international mega-stardom! It’s surely only a matter of time…

Seriously though it will be nice to meet some other bloggers in real life and to cheer on Fran from Whinge Whinge Wine who is in the final 3 of the comedy writers category this year! I’m sure we can all discuss DA, reach, PRs, plugins and widgets until the cows come home. Or just drink a lot, eat a bit and have a dance!

  • I’m well up for the drinking lots.

My daughter will stay in bed until the moment the sun comes up. Must be my superior parenting*

*Yea, it’s not, turns out it’s luck.

    • Then drink lots we shall do! We can discuss your superior parenting skills at the same time…

  • We use the gro-clock as well. It helped my son at the start but now we use it as a nightlight. It’s not too bright but it’s comforting for him to have it there. Have fun at the blog conference! #KCACOLS

    • Yes it is actually pretty good now we’ve put it out of reach! Thanks for commenting!

  • Noo! You’ve completely ruined my rose-tinted-glass theory [dream] that this clock will work wonders for us when our little man gets to that stage! Considering that he [at 16mo] has already worked out how to unlock my phone (using a pattern unlock), open the camera, and take a selfie – I’m going to assume we may have the same problem as you do… Oh well, one can always hope! #KCACOLS

    • Never too young to take a selfies these days!! Don’t worry though the Gro Clock is actually pretty good!

  • Haha. I tried these. Wrote a comedy review of it. It was totally unsuccessful and its now in some draw untouched!! Good luck in finding a way to disable that button!! #KCACOLS

    • Oh no really? Our drawers are full of stuff that didn’t quite work!!

  • My 9 month old sleeps pretty well. It’s too soon for a gro clock yet but I will be getting one when the time comes.

Have fun at blogfest. I live down in Cornwall so don’t attend bloggy things although I wish I could!

Thanks for linking up at #KCACOLS.
Hope you join up again next Sunday.

    • Shame you can’t make Blogfest. Hoping to meet lots of people from blogland!

  • For many months the gro-clock was yet another pointless purchase… but now my toddler finally ‘gets it’… and luckily it’s out of reach so he can’t cheat it! Xx

    • Yay! Glad it’s worked for you! All going pretty well here now too!

  • You need a really high toddler proof shelf. Although upside – your child is clearly a technology genius!! #kcacols

    • Think you need to be a tech genius to get through school these days!!

  • Oh I was thinking of getting this clock but I might give it a miss for now! Good luck with the blogging event. x #KCACOLS

    • No definitely give it a go! Actually works quite well when you get into the swing of it!

  • Oh what a nightmare! They always find a way round these things so they are technically following the rules. Perhaps a high shelf? Enjoy your conference.#KCACOLS

    • Yes it’s well out of arm’s reach now and working well!! Hooray!

  • Not sure why but this post is showing the tops of letters and not the bottom so I’m unable to read it. #KCACOLS

    • So strange. One other person I know has this issue from time to time and I’ve never figured out why it happens! Sorry!

  • Ah the Gro Clock, something I’m thinking about. We knocked Little L’s nap down to 40mins which meant he was sleeping till around 7am – perfect, practically a lie in! Then the clocks changed and so far we’ve had a 4:30 ? (Torture) and a 6:30 (I can handle that). I’m waiting to see what it averages out at before I buy one. #KCACOLS

    • Our one is set at 645am and works pretty well. Even if he wakes up before then he sits in bed until the sun comes up! 430am isn’t fun ??

  • Great problem-solving skills Joshua ? enjoy the blog conference! #kcacols

  • We love our gro clock, though that’s probably because my daughter still hasn’t learnt to escape from her cotbed and isn’t tall enough for us to have to take the sides off yet – so she can’t get out and press the button! #KCACOLS

  • Bit of a trip for me so just tell everyone Jeremy from ThirstyDaddy says Hi and have a few drinks for me. Nobody will know who you are talking about, but it might make for a good icebreaker. #KCACOLS

  • We love our groclock. It took a bit for my 6-year-old to warm up to it but my 4-year-old embraced it from day one #KCACOLS

  • We bought one and used it for 3 days in an attempt to get Arthur to stay in his bed at night time until the sun came up. His sleeping got worse (if that is possible) and he literally wouldn’t not fall properly asleep because he was waiting for us to leave the room and then he woke up and cried. We used the button ourselves to bring the sun up and make it ‘OK’ to bring him into our room at 3am when we were just too tired to carry on lol. Maybe we’ll try again in a few months #kcacols
